Itinerary

Your Athens private mini bus transfer will take you to the beautiful village of Litochoro (4 hours), nestled on the lower slopes of Mount Olympus. This large traditional village, with maze of cobbled, meandering streets weaving around traditional Macedonian houses topped with gabled roofs and surrounded by walled courtyards, will be your starting and finishing point on the first leg of this trip. Your main briefing for the Olympus ascent will take place over a lovely dinner in the village.

Overnight: Litochoro. Accommodation: Guesthouse or Hotel. Meals: D. Activity: –

Off we go! You will be dropped off at Prionia at 1100m, the starting point of the trek to Agapitos Refuge (3-4hours). Much of this hike is through thick virgin forest which is mainly dominated by European black pine trees and to a lesser extent firs (Abies hybridogenus), beech trees (Facus moesiaca),  and wild cherry  trees (Prunus cerasifera), and a significant selection of mossy plants. The clear and well-maintained trail leads up to refuge ‘A’ where we will spend our first night on the mountain proper.

Overnight: Mount Olympus/Refuge ‘A’

Accommodation: Dormitories

Meals: B L

Activity: Trekking 3 hours 1000m ascent.

Good morning to the mountain of the ancient Greek gods! After an energizing breakfast you will ascend to Mousses plateau (2630m) following part of the E4 trail. Walk through awe-inspiring landscapes and enjoy stunning views of Mount Olympus’ peaks: Skala at 2866m, Stefani (throne of Zeus 2909m), Skolio (2911m), and of course Mytikas at 2918m. Those of you content with a less demanding ascent can stay at the plateau and choose easier and shorter treks, while those with more experience and daring scale the heights, reaching the challenging summit of Mytikas!.

Tonight you will stay at a smaller refuge named Kakalos after Christos Kakalos, the local hunter and guide who together with the Swiss climbers Fred Boissonnas and Daniel Baud Bovy made the first recorded ascent up Mount Olympus to the highest peak Mytikas on the 2nd of August in 1913.

Today you travel on to Papingo village in the Pindos Mountains.  En route you will get the chance to stop for lunch and visit the famous UNESCO World Heritage site of Meteora.  Meteora can be translated as “rocks in the air”, “middle of the sky”, or “in the heavens above”, meanings which try to do justice to the unique geological phenomenon of these sandstone pillars reaching up into the sky; the monasteries perched on them make the sight even more phenomenal. The presence of these Greek Orthodox monasteries, dating from 14th century and on, clinging somewhat surreally to these giant pillars, and the very fact that monks live there, zip-lining across from one to the other, have made Meteora a very special and sacred destination.

After a nourishing breakfast you will be taken to Monodendri, a 55 minute drive from Megalo Papingo.  It is from here that your trek down the deepest gorge in the world (as stated by the Guinness Book of Records) the spectacular Vikos gorge, commences. You will hike the trail that follows the Aoos river and later on meets Voidomatis river, renowned for its natural beauty, cool crystal rock pools and unique flora. The gorge has craggy cliff walls that descend a staggering 1600 metres in places to the gorge’s floor, and up to until the early 20th century a great number of plants there were sought after for their medicinal properties and the people who gathered them were known as “Vikogiatrous” or ”Vikos-doctors”.

Timfi, where you will finally reach one of the alpine lakes of “Drakolimni” or “Dragonlakes” at 2050m which is home to dragon like newts.  From here the views of mountains stretching into the distance are magnificent, and can be enjoyed for much of the trek back down to Mikro Papingo.
