ITINERARY

Kea

Your tour leader will meet you at Athens International Airport and accompany you to the port of Lavrio for your ferry trip to Kea. The trip provides a scenic introduction to Markonisos – the biggest uninhabited island in Greece and of course Kea, the Cycladic island closest to Athens, known for its natural beauty and rich history. Get to know your fellow walkers over a delicious meal prepared using authentic local produce. Enjoy – Kali orexi!

Kea

Start the day with a hearty breakfast before setting off along ancient trails through some of Kea’s most spectacular valleys and hillsides. The route takes you from Ioulida, Kea’s pint-sized capital, to Otzias village, known for its picturesque long sandy beach. Along the way, you’ll encounter narrow cobbled paths, the ancient sculpture of the mythical, enigmatic Lion of Kea and a fascinating archaeological museum. In the evening we will stroll around the picturesque tiny seaside village of Vourkari, a ‘meeting point’ for sailors and weekenders, featuring Kea’s most celebrated seafood restaurants and bars.

Kythnos

Depart from Kea after breakfast and head by boat to neighbouring Kythnos, an island of golden beaches, arid countryside and hillsides dotted with stone huts. Your base for the next two nights is the pretty fishing village of Merichas. Look forward to learning more about chora, the island’s capital and Dryopida village, which took its name from the very first inhabitants of the island.Take a circular hike around the site of Vryokastro, Kythnos’ ancient capital, and get up-close to some of the island’s unique natural phenomena.

Kythnos

Your day in Kythnos starts with a sun salutation to source energy for the day ahead. Enjoy the stunning scenery as you transfer by road to the eastern side of the island. Your hike starts at Loutra, an idyllic waterfront village famous for its natural hot springs where there will be time for a healthy dip! After that, the walking route will take you past ancient castle ruins, whitewashed chapels and other little-known gems in the dramatic countryside. No doubt you’ll meet local farmers and shepherds and exchange friendly greetings along the way.

Activity: Hiking 3:00 hours/7Km/+240m -240m

Your final hours on Kythnos are just long enough to enjoy a last mouthwatering homemade “tiropita” pastry and Greek coffee for breakfast before boarding the morning ferry back to Lavrio and your onward journey home. Airport transfers are provided as your Cyclades hiking adventure comes to an end.

How to book

By clicking the 'Book now' button above, you will be asked to pay a 20% deposit. This is to secure your booking with us.
On receipt of your booking we will send you full written confirmation of your booking, together with your trip invoice, which is usually due for payment 8 weeks prior to departure. The date payment is due will show on the invoice. The confirmation will include personal details, flight information (if booked), joining instructions, visa application advice,and a copy of the trip notes. It will also include a checklist to ensure you get everything ready for your holiday. The joining instructions will explain how to meet up with others in your group and include a contact number should you be delayed.

Arriving in Athens

Most flights from Europe arrive in Athens by 3:00pm. Alternatively you will need an additional night in Athens on Wednesday before the trip. Our driver will be at the Athens International Airport on Thursday at 2:45pm to drive you to Lavrio Port. The ferry departs at 5.00pm.
If your flight arrived earlier or you are already in Athens city please arrange your own taxi transfer to Lavrio port Marina A' at 'Mikis Thedorakis' avenue. Our meeting point is at cafe 'Petrino' at 3.15pm.

Accommodation

We will spend 2 nights in Kea, 2 nights in Kythnos, in traditional stylish island accommodations with en-suite facilities. We sleep on a twin share basis. In such case of solo travelers booking a room on their own, there is a single supplement charge applied (200€).

Departure flight

Regarding your departure flight on Monday we recommend booking flights with take off time at 6:00pm or later.

Personality Journeys hiking team experience

Our hiking guides are year round hikers themselves and have a vast repertoire of paths trekked around Greece, including demanding gorge passages and high altitudes. They are trained in hiking schools which are certified by the Hellenic Federation of Mountaineering & Climbing H.F.M.C.

Walking daily plan

Our daily distance covered hiking will be approximately 6km. Since this is a vacation trip and not a race, we are flexible in a way to increase satisfaction. There will be extended hiking routes for those who want to hike further.

Fitness level

We go at our own pace. We walk in normal rhythms and whenever we feel like it we stop to take pictures of the stunning scenery and enjoy the views of the horizon. We will always adjust the pace to keep everyone happy. In order though to better appreciate the uniqueness of your holiday, we advise you to be in good physical condition. On your last two weeks before the trip, it is a good idea to take several walks in hilly terrain.

Minimum and maximum age limit

We require our participants to be above 18 years old. In the case of families we offer walking tours with no age limitation.

Weather

The weather conditions during spring and autumn are on average ideal for walking: moderate breezes combined with pleasantly warm temperatures. Air temperature in spring is 16-23 degrees and in autumn 19-26 degrees.

How safe is it to hike in the Greek islands?

The hiking paths are selected to ensure that you can fully take in the magnificence of the landscapes, while discovering their flora and fauna. The selected paths are easy and safe.

What do I need to bring?

Small day-pack, walking shoes & long walking socks, sandals, hiking (comfortable) long trousers, long sleeve shirts, wind proof jacket, sunglasses, hat, sun cream, water can, trekking poles (optional), bathing suit, beach towel, head-torch, toiletries, basic First Aid Kit including: antiseptic cream, throat lozenges, diarrhoea treatment (Imodium), painkillers, plasters and blister treatment, insect repellent.
We would ask you to bring 1 soft-suitcase per person.
